KLETS
For the client project we chose IMA Projects. IMA Projects is a organization that help the refugees in the camp. Daily they see different problems and one of them is communication: learning the Dutch language. At the moment the refugees get a one hour lesson of Dutch every week given by volunteers.
Research
What and how did I do it?
This semester by attending workshops of Kadian and Pennie I learned researching by
working with the Double Diamond. I made a POV and after that I made How Might We questions. It helped us
to think further for coming up with solutions for the problem statement.
POV: A refugee residing in The Netherlands needs more accessible ways of learning the Dutch language to
increase their proficiency in the language, because limited language proficiency limits their
integration
and stifles their chances of obtaining employment.
We also did interviews with the refugees and volunteers. We
asked them about their experiences at the
moment and what they think is important for learning the Dutch language.
Why did I do it?
I did this to practice working with a design thinking methode and to get a better understanding of the problem. I wanted to know what the refugees need and how we can help them.
Persona
What did I do?
For this project I made a persona where it's very clear what problems the refugees face and what their needs are.
How did I do it?
I was able to make the persona by visiting the refugee camp in Simpelveld and having interviews with the refugees that live there and the volunteers who teach them Dutch.
Why did I do it?
A persona helps us as a team keep the target audience at the center of the design of the product that we're making. It's a summarization of the goals, frustrations and needs they have.
Concept poster / Prototype design
In week 7 we had our Poster Exhibition. We had to make a concept poster of the product that we are making. We wanted to make an application for the refugees so that they could practice learning Dutch more. Some people cannot go the the lessons, because they have children and with an application on the phone they can practice in their own homes whenever they want.
What did I do?
By this time we had a concept, but not a design yet. I decided to make poster and a prototype design to use for in the poster so that teachers and students could see the idea that we have.
How did I do it?
I made the posters in Illustrator and InDesign. On the first poster I put the most
important selling points, a couple of languages the refugees speak and the Dutch they want to learn,
pictures of the camp where they live at the moment and the background story.
I got feedback from my classmates and the teachers:
- If you want people to use your application it should be more inviting and friendly.
- They said that the poster was a bit too much text and that I should make it more visual and use a
qr-code for if they want to know more they can scan it.
I made the changes and it changed the poster positively.
Poster Design
and
iterations
Why did I do it?
I made the poster to show the concept of our product.
Interactive prototype
What did I do?
We wanted to make an interactive prototype in Figma, so when the design was mostly finished I started making the prototype interactive by connecting the pages and making my own components to make the features of the prototype seem like it's a real application.
How did I do it?
I made the scrolling pages, input form where you have to enter your name and buttons that would turn wrong when you click on it. I already knew how to make a couple components, but some other I had to look for tutorials to learn it.
Why did I do it?
I made the prototype interactive so that can really see how the application is going to
work and with an interavtive prototype we could use it to user test people for feedback to improve the
application.

Usertesting
What did I do?
To know if the application will be affective and is easy to understand I made an user test.
How did I do it?
I made a test with the explanation of the test, testcriteria's and different questions I asked the tester.
Why did I do it?
I wanted to see if they liked the design and if the navigation of the app is easy to
follow. With the testing I can see the application through another ones eyes that sees it for the first
time. It helps you see things you overlooked and with the feedback you get you can make adjustments so
that the user will have a better experience the next time.

Showcase
In week 12 we had our second showcase. For this showcase we had to atleast have an interactive Figma prototype. Students and teachers tested our prototype and gave useful feedback, so we could improve our product. We also had to go to different team projects to see how their project is going and we were also able to give feedback to them.
Coding
We started coding the front-end of the web application together. Everyone worked in a seperate branch so that we could code without disturbing each other and when every page was done we merged it together. At the end we put the back-end together with the front-end.
Reflection
I learned a lot of new things during this project. I learned how to work with the Double Diamond method and how to apply it to our client project. For the next time it would have been better to work together as a team on the POV and How Might We questions, so that we could have brainstormed more ideas together. Overall, this project taught me how to approach a design challenge and search for a solution that will meet the needs of the user.
